During the month of August, we meet in the downstairs fellowship hall where it is cooler, and the services are less structured and feature a topic for open discussion. Please note that children’s Religious Exploration will resume in September, but they are welcome to join us in the fellowship hall this month.
The term zeitgeist, meaning “spirit of the times,” describes the idea that you can identify a pattern in meaningful practices that is specific to a particular historical time-period which links different realms of social life and social groups. All of us are influenced to some degree by the zeitgeist into which we are born, and as the psychologist Victor E. Frankl suggested, “Even a genius cannot completely resist his Zeitgeist, the spirit of his time.” When we look around America today, the “spirit of the times” is divisive, angry, overly sensitive, and quick to label opponents as “evil” – sometimes even prone to violence. Our discussion topic this week is: How might we resist or (if possible) reshape America’s zeitgeist into something more positive and in line with our values?
